THE THIRD ANNUAL MEETING

OF WATCH CONNOISSEUR CLUB

WARSAW THE 23RD OF JUNE 2007

At the 23rd of June, more then 130 Polish watch-enthusiasts associated in Watch Connoisseur Club gathered in Warsaw to talk about horology, see some fine timepieces and declare war on forgeries. Everything started at about 10.30 a.m. at the Intercontinental Hotel. Even before entering the hall everyone was curiously looking at each other’s wrists.

Then finally, after a warm welcome from the Club Chairman Prof. Zdzisław Mrugalski, the meeting begun.

First appeared Mr. Kurt Klaus a legendary engineer of IWC Schaffhausen, who revealed the secrets of perpetual calendar in IWC wristwatches. It’s amazing what a complicated web of mechanical elements is necessary to incorporate a simple idea of pointing the exact date.

Our next guest was a representative of Vulcain manufacture, who resigned of spending his wedding anniversary at home to speak about the history and the present of Vulcain.

After a short break, when we could all appease our appetites with a warm meal and some hot timepieces, Mr. Waldemar Ferri Szczerbowski an Antiquorum consultant expressed his passion for collecting fine, historic timepieces and revealed some rules of the luxury watches market. His presentation induced a fervent discussion which could have been cut short only by an event of high standing.

This took place several minutes later. Mr. Dominique Bernaz, the head of Vacheron Constantin Heritage Centre not only appreciated our passion and craziness for clocks and watches but also introduced a review of Vacheron Constantin history hidden in extensive archives of this ancient manufacture.

After this trip through ages of high horology, a presentation made by a representative of a young but intriguing Italian company Anonimo, brought the theoretical part of the meeting to an original end.

But the cream of the top was an unprecedented action of public forgeries disposal in front of Golden Terrace Shopping Centre. In presence of customs officers from Customs Chamber in Warsaw we’ve rolled about 700 fake wristwatches collected by Customs Service and Club members. The roller was driven by Kurt Klaus himself.

Our action of destroying forgeries shows sizes and noxiousness of counterfeiting business and should open the gate to other enlightening activities which we look forward to.

Report on meeting Watch Connoisseur Club, Warsaw 23.06.2007

Preparations.

A few days after the last meeting which was held on July 2006, some of us running with thoughts to the next year, were setting up the plans for this year’s meeting. Lecture on respecting intellectual property in 2006 became an impulse for organizing spectacular part this year’s “watchmaniacs” holiday, rolling the watch imitations. The next impulse was last year’s visit in Poland of the famous IWC constructor Mr. Kurt Klaus, and his lecture about perpetual calendar delivered in narrow group of clients in one of the local watch dealer’s shop. As essential as a good ideas, organizing each meeting of this kind requires always detailed preparations. In case our meeting, its real beginning started in march, when on discussion forum of the club, declaration was made for collecting the watch imitations. Mentioned above preparations often caused a lack of sleep Joanna which took care of meetings. Speaking of imitations the discussion has shown how hard it will be to collect them.

Even the knowledge, that making the imitation is a form of theft, and using them is a form of acceptation such a behavior, many people using watch imitations didn’t want to get rid of them. Few meetings with shop owners showed us that we can forget about collecting fakes in brand names stores. Except two stores: “odCzasu doCzasu”, Warsaw’s Złote Tarasy (pics 001_001_ and 001_002) and “Timeless” in Gdansk no one participated in collecting watch imitations.

Expecting such as difficulties, before setting up a meeting date, we have receive a promise from Chamber of Customs in helping to collect needed amount of watches for spectacular rolling. Most of the watches have been collected and delivered by club members. Among these were imitations of “Rolex”, “Patek”, “Cartier”, “Maurice Lacroix” or “Vacheron Constantin”. You can see those on pictures before and after rolling. (010_001 to 010_014).

Everything has been prepared: list of sponsors, list of the club members, and we left for Warsaw.

Some of us met on unofficial meeting on Friday in the restaurant by the river shore to have a few beers just like it was last year. Everyone was nicely surprised by appearance of Kurt Klaus, who wanted to participate in the whole project. His open discuss with participants made him lots of friends.

Meeting in Intercontinental Hotel.

Like every year, all the guests have been welcome by President of the club Professor Zdzisław Mrugalski. There were more quests than expected so we had to add more chairs. At the beginning of the speech Profesor playfully mentioned, the club members fans of mechanisms to measure the time, which in opinion of many philosophers doesn’t exist at all, questioned about her opinion in this case, Noble Price Winner Wisława Szymborska said: “if the time doesn’t exist, so what do we need the watchmakers for, such a beautiful profession”. Mr. Mrugalski wishing all interesting discussions asked Vice President of the club Władek Meller to continue the meeting. In the middle of the room there was the container into which quests could throw and admire all the watch imitations. Next to the container was a cart with two bags full of imitations brought by Chambers of Customs. (pics 003_006). Because of the tight schedule of the meeting according to plan, leader invited to the speech platform Mr. Kurt Klaus from IWC.(pics 002_001 to 002_006)

History of the perpetual calendar from the Portuguese collection in IWC company.

In the beginning of his lecture Kurt Klaus reminded story about beginnings IWC company, and told about his personal experiences with IWC company. Having on mind a fact that he started to work for company 50 years ago, his visit in Poland and this whole year, has for Mr. Klaus special meaning. Mentioning beginning of employment in IWC Kurt Klaus emphasized working in service department, thanks to which he could work with all IWC watch models, and that could help him understand company’s philosophy, and work in the constructor’s team guided by famous watchmaker Albert Pellaton. Thanks to those experiences in 1985 he could prepare and work on Da Vinci model with perpetual calendar.

In the next part of his speech Mr. Kurt Klaus was talking about changes in the mechanism of this calendar , when introducing famous watch collection Portuguese.

The last part of the speech it was introduction this year’s production news in IWC company, and a very special model to Kurt Klaus limited edition “Da Vinci Kurt Klaus”. (pics 003_001 to 003_009).

Presentation Vulcain Company

After a short brake all guest listened to presentation of Mr. Bernard Fleury from Vulcain Company. Thanks to the lecture we found out that a small and not yet recognizable in Poland company has such a unique designs of watches, their own mechanisms and a special history of the model called “Cricket”. This watch in history of the watch making was called “president’s watch”, because it had been worn by American Presidents beginning on Franklin D. Roosevelt, worn also by Truman, Eisenhauer and Gerald Ford.

Collecting and love for watches.

After the meal the guests gathered to listen to the speech of the adviser famous company Antiquorum company known for watch auctions Mr. Waldemar Ferri-Szczerbowski. He mentioned that collecting watches makes sense only when collector really loves watches. Then he introduced the tendencies, quality expectations and brands preferred among auction watches. Not every one agreed with the spokesmen which raised the discussion about the position and popularity brands such as Panerai, Omega and other brands. (pics 005_001 to 005_003).

Vacheron Constantin – presentation from museum.

The next spokesmen Mr. Dominique Bernaz, working in Vacheron Constantin museum, and a person responsible for gathering historic documentation of the company. He told some interesting facts from history of the company.

Moment for organizing crew.

Right before the next speech, meeting leaders took a while to thank club sponsors, thanks to which organizing the event was possible. This year’s meeting was sponsored by :

Noble Bank, Hermitage Boutique, Plus, Pracownia Czasu, odCzasu doCzasu, and Poljot Euro (pics 012_006). During the break all participants could admire presented watches of the watch companies like: Ulysse Nardin, Girard Perregaux, Perrelet, Vulcain, Anonimo, IWC also Hirsch straps. Company Poljot Euro distributor straps for watches organized a mini watch maker’s stand.

Anonimo - new brand on our market

Mr. Giovanni Iozzi representative for Anonimo company during his speech he underlined, that the basic of creating this company was knowing the customer’s expectations and a manufacturer’s experience. Today the company is recognizable as an Italian brand with the product of high quality.(pics 007_001 to 007_004)

Sponsor’s surprise

Just like last year sponsors have prepared many surprises (Noble Bank, IWC, Perrelet) which were drawn among all participants. For drawing Władek Meller invited two additional participants (pics 002_005). The drawn items quickly found their new owners. (pics 008_001 to 008_007 and 009_001 to 009_002).

Rolling the imitations.

After the drawing all guests followed the cart full of fakes, went to especially prepared courtyard Centrum Złote Tarasy. There, decorated with banners, waited for them, and fake watches road roller, and placed on the red carpet metal plate with the club logo. After checking by Chambers of Customs seals on bags, all imitations were poured on yellow metal plate. As a road roller operator suggested, that all items should be spread evenly, some participants used his advise to manifest their individual feelings for fakes, by trampling them.

(pics 012_004 and 012_005)

Right before starting destruction of fakes two club members had a short public discussion, if it’s really worth it destroying the collected fakes, or if by doing so we won’t become defenders of watch monopolists.

After the short dialog Mr. Kurt Klaus was invited to do the driving, he stated that he has devoted his whole life to build and fix watches, but he has never driven a road roller, but he will be happy to do the destruction of items which should have never been produced.

After the first drive over the fakes, all the participants could find out that destroying the fakes won’t be as easy, there were even opinions like “without dynamite it won’t work” or “good Chinese work”. Even though the road roller wasn’t one of those road giants, after a few drive over sessions all the imitations were destroyed. Moment of destruction was a good time to take a souvenir pictures, which was the most symbolic part of the whole meeting. These pictures were placed in press together with a description of the event.
